Fresh cut flowers need to be shipped carefully
May 28th, 2010 by admin
Each day millions of fresh cut flowers are moved carefully from growers’ farms into florist stores. In this country, most of them are coming from foreign growers who export to our billion dollar market in huge quantities. So it is always amazing to me that these flowers will arrive looking fresh and well. Packing and shipping these delicate, heat-sensitive plants quickly enough to land them looking fresh at the corner store in our neighborhood is both an art and a science. It’s an art because the growers have to judge what condition their flowers will arrive at the wholesalers. And it is a science because an impressive lineup of water containers has been developed over the years that will hold flowers fresh and moist for long enough to even allow exporters to send flowers by sea in ships.
