Is Finding Public Records Difficult?

I really want to find out more about this guy that I met, so I am hoping someone can tell me how to go about finding public records. I want to know whether he has a record, and also whether or not he is single like he says he is. I want to check the marriage records as well as the criminal records. I would love it if I could do this for free, but I am willing to pay a small fee if that is required in order to get the information. I don’t want to be lied to or tricked.
