The Three Types of Patents

The three different patent types are: utility, plant, and design. Someone who invents a new machine would file under the utility category. A person who discovers a new plant would file under the plant category of course. A person who comes up with a new design for manufacture would file under the design category. It is pretty easy to figure out which inventions fall under each of the categories. The process is pretty much self explanatory. However, with some inventions it may be apppropriate to file under more than one category in order to provide full protection for the invention.
